Our Background

At Mary Menders, we believe that every stitch tells a story, every fiber carries a memory, and every well-loved garment deserves another chapter.

The inspiration for Mary Menders began on the shores of Nantucket Island, where founder Rhonda Herriott spent her formative years between 1969-1980.

​

Surrounded by the wild Atlantic Ocean, weathered shingled cottages nestled in the dunes where the scent of ambergris, climbing roses and salt-swept gardens permeated a bouquet that rivaled any florist shop in the world. Enduring craftsmanship from the time of the whaling era spurred new traditions in art, looming, weaving that has endured throughout the centuries.

As a young student, Rhonda was fortunate to study needlework under the influence of celebrated embroidery artist Erica Wilson, widely known as "America's First Lady of Stitchery."  Wilson, a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework in London, helped revive interest in embroidery and needlepoint across America through her teaching, books and television programs.

At the same time, Rhonda spent countless hours observing the artisans of "Nantucket Looms."  Nantucket Looms introduced her to the timeless art of weaving. Watching wool, linen, and cotton transformed into heirloom quality textiles sparked a lifelong fascination with the play between texture, color, craftsmanship, and the beauty of natural fibers.

"Natural fibers have a language all their own," Rhonda often says. "Wool remembers the shepherd, and cotton remembers the sun. When we work with them, we become a part of their story."

That philosophy remains at the heart of Mary Menders today. We celebrate wool and cotton not merely as materials, but as living expressions of heritage and artistry.  Whether repairing a treasured Fair Isle sweater, reinforcing a beloved fisherman's knit, or patchworking a pair of sky-blue jeans with exotic cotton cloth, we seek to preserve and enhance the character of the soul of the piece and its person entrusted to our care.

Today, Mary Menders reflects a lifetime shaped by artistry, needlework, weaving and mending (darning) with a profound sense of craftsmanship.

​

Our work is inspired by the couture traditions of fine design, the practical wisdom of New England makers, and the simple conviction that handcrafted wearables are worth saving. 

​

We believe the finest garments are not merely worn - they are lived in, loved, mended, and passed on as heirlooms.
